SmartSafe – What is it and what does it do?

Let’s break it down simply…

SmartSafe is a hardware-based device and control system designed to provide robust cyber protection for laptops.

  • We’re different. No-one else does device security beyond software.
  • Unlike other data security solutions that rely on software, which is itself an attack vector, SmartSafe is an embedded solution, more like hardware in the device.
  • It operates independently of the operating system.
  • SmartSafe not only controls device access but also dictates when and where data can be accessed.
  • Robust against the Quantum threat landscape as it does not run in software
  • Trusted and tested by the UK Govt.
  • Has a Mission Impossible style shut down functionality.

Our story began a few years back when Norman Shaw, our founder and a seasoned entrepreneur in laptop solutions, recognised the need for secure USBs with geofencing capabilities. Norman teamed up with John Pragnell, our visionary scientist with a deep knowledge and background in internet security standards. Together, they embarked on a journey that led to the birth of ExactTrak.

Here’s what we do, and where we’re headed.

Initially focused on secure USBs, our journey evolved during Norman and John’s time in the GCHQ accelerator. They observed a crucial defence need: the challenge of controlling microphones and cameras within secure buildings. This led to cumbersome practices like using multiple laptops with different operating systems and even resorting to drilling out cameras, all of which posed significant operational and security risks. ExactTrak stepped in with a solution: a way to control devices externally, enabling a single, secure laptop.

And as the working landscape shifted in a post pandemic world, towards remote and hybrid working, the focus expanded from device control in a war zone to data protection for all computer users. With the rise in remote working, data has become increasingly vulnerable to both accidental and malicious threats.

Working from home can put your device and data at risk, they’re often commonplace..such as innocently downloading games with hidden viruses, uploading sensitive information onto external USBs to look at on the move, or simply emailing yourself information to a personal email address.

For all these everyday scenarios, SmartSafe technology embedded into your laptops will uplevel your Working From Home security, avoiding compromising the native operating system and bios.

It’s not software

Unlike other data security solutions that rely on software, which can itself be an attack vector, SmartSafe is an embedded solution that functions more like hardware at the device source, operating independently of the operating system. As cyber threats evolve, including those posed by quantum computing, attack vectors will become even more vulnerable. SmartSafe goes beyond software-based security by not only controlling device access but also dictating when and where data can be accessed. For instance, accessing sensitive data in a coffee shop is restricted, and if a laptop is lost, the data store can be remotely disabled, ensuring that the data remains secure.

Technically, SmartSafe comprises a card with memory that resides in the laptop. Utilising patented communication and encryption methods, SmartSafe operates independently of the operating system and BIOS, enforcing policies based on time and location.

Government Tested

Working with government clients means our solution has met stringent security standards, and has led to significant investments and partnerships. For instance, Dell has partnered with us to expand SmartSafe’s reach across commercial enterprises globally. With this stamp of assurance from the UK government and with 67% of employees considered knowledge holders of sensitive data and engaged in remote work, SmartSafe offers the locktight security solution organisations have been looking for.

A Solution in a Quantum World.

With SmartSafe, you can rest assured that your data remains secure even as the computing landscape evolves. SmartSafe provides robust protection for your data in a quantum world.

Quantum-Safe Encryption:

SmartSafe employs encryption methods that are safeguarded against quantum attacks by operating outside the sphere of quantum computing vulnerabilities. Unlike traditional encryption, which relies on mathematical complexity that quantum computers could potentially break, SmartSafe’s encryption sits on a dedicated hardware card, effectively isolated from quantum attack vectors. This architecture ensures that your encryption keys remain secure, even as quantum computing power evolves, providing a robust defence against future quantum threats.

Quantum Random Number Generation:

SmartSafe ensures the security of its encryption keys by storing them in a location that is impervious to quantum computer attacks. While quantum-based random number generators are often vulnerable, SmartSafe’s architecture isolates the keys, making them inaccessible to quantum-based threats and ensuring they cannot be predicted or compromised by quantum computers.
